Moda Tharindu - Sinhala Movie

Yesterday (Oct-11), I went with my family to the Lite Cinema (Lekha) in Homagama and watched the movie Moda Tarindu. Luckily we had made online bookings and otherwise, we would’ve had to sit on the floor. All the seats were sold out. That’s a good trend I’ve noticed recently.

I went in with expectations slightly above what others had expressed but ended up feeling a bit below that. Still, overall, it was a satisfying movie. According to my taste, although it doesn’t quite reach the level of comedies like Sikuru Hathe or Kathuru Mithuru, which I consider best among the comedies I’ve watched in theaters, this one is still good. No regrets watching it. But I do remember that some people who watched Kathuru Mithuru based on my recommendation didn’t enjoy it much. So don’t go just because of my recommendation or don’t avoid it either. My opinion might still be useful.

Setting

Throughout the film, the environments matched the story really well. The music was a bit paced  rhythm (but entertaining). The actors fit their roles nicely and performed them well.

Continuity

The scenes flowed smoothly from one to the next without inconsistencies. The only logical issue I noticed was in the logic of life after death. Everyone appeared in the form they had at the time of death. That made me in doubt, shouldn’t there be infants or young children among them too? But that’s not really a flaw, just a stylistic choice.

Shortcomings

Except for the driver who took them on the trip, no other character seemed to embody humanity in a meaningful way. Especially some of Tarindu’s friends behaved in ways that didn’t reflect human sensitivity (even in the real world, people aren’t that emotionless). I won’t go into too much detail since it could affect the enjoyment of future viewers. But I must say, the story could’ve benefited from a bit more humanity.

Highlights

The grandmother’s character was the best. Her role was consistently entertaining. Scenes of her hanging onto buses and three wheelers, climbing walls, her dialogues and actions had us laughing a lot. She truly was the standout character. Other fun moments included Dinu talking about Tarindu’s handsomeness, Dinuka flirting with Dinu, the fortune-telling lady, and the song with the police. There were many attempts to highlight opportunism in people, which stood out. The cheerful and entertaining ending left everyone walking out of the theater with big smiles. That was awesome.

My rating for this movie is 6/10.
